Newsom Signs Landmark California Children’s Online Safety Bills Into Law

In this Law.com article, Kandi Parsons unpacks California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signing of two landmark bills regulating children’s social media and AI chatbot use, offering insight into why large tech companies often find value in a uniform regulatory baseline even when it restricts their own products.

Kandi pointed to the practical business logic behind that support, explaining that the legislation actually benefits large tech companies by preventing a patchwork where some competitors invest in safety controls while others skip them entirely.

“One challenge, obviously, for businesses is there are costs and resources and efforts that are made into implementing certain protections and controls,” Kandi said. “And generally, companies prefer if all the players in the space are operating under the same set of requirements.”

Kandi added that the legal landscape could shift if lawmakers push further.

“If additional AI laws start to pass that are more restrictive, there are certainly a number of groups who [would] bring challenges to those if they think that they come close to impacting First Amendment rights,” she said.
