Marielena assists ZwillGen attorneys and clients on issues relevant to international, federal, and state consumer privacy, data protection, freedom of expression, and cybersecurity related law and policy.

Prior to joining ZwillGen, Marielena served as a law clerk for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the Department of Commerce, where she researched and drafted comparative analyses regarding legislative bills and industry principles to better develop a federal approach to data protection and privacy. Before that, Marielena spent the summer working for the Cybersecurity and Communications Reliability Division at the FCC assisting attorneys in the use of blockchain technologies, infrastructure security, and 5G deployment. Marielena also worked as a telecommunications law clerk for Keller and Heckman LLP researching and advising clients on the applicability of federal laws affecting rural broadband deployment, net neutrality, and FCC/FTC compliance policies.

As a law student at American University Washington College of Law (WCL), Marielena served as Senator-at-large and Committee Chair for the Student Bar Association, Senior Staffer for the American University Business Law Review, Senior Editor of the Modern American Law Brief, and Vice-President of the Information, Security & Privacy Law Association. In addition, Marielena was a student attorney for the WCL Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic, where she drafted privacy policies, terms of use agreements, fair use analyses, and registered trademarks for nonprofit organizations and startups. Marielena is involved in many bar associations including the FCBA, IAPP, HNBA, and the ABA. In 2018, she received the Federal Communications Bar Association Foundation Award for her exemplified dedication to communications law.
